I spent quite a bit of time buying shoes—a full hour, in fact.
My parents gave me a pair of shoes as a birthday present.
Since I’ve started running in the mornings recently, I happened to be in the market for running shoes.
We went shopping together, but—believe it or not—it took me just under an hour to make a choice.
When I say "believe it or not," you’re probably wondering, "Who on earth is this guy?"
I usually pride myself on being the intuitive type; normally, I’d just think, "A 1,000-yen pair is fine." But once I started weighing all the different options, I found myself completely lost.
I rarely agonize over decisions like this. It felt like discovering a new side of myself—realizing that even someone who usually thinks "anything will do" can get so indecisive. Plus, once doubt crept in, even the shoes I initially liked became hard to commit to.
What was it that made me waver so much?
In the end, I chose the pair I had liked right at the start. I also picked another pair my parents chose because I genuinely liked them, too.
Since I was told I could buy a few pairs if I was having trouble deciding, I picked two.
There’s a psychological theory that, deep down, we often believe the first option we chose is actually the best one.
Apparently, there’s a statistical likelihood that your first answer on a test is correct, and people often revert to their initial choice after agonizing over it. Or something like that.
Anyway, overthinking aside, I bought two pairs: one suitable for running and one stylish pair for everyday wear.
Specialty shoe stores are great.
